The Decline of Skype in Pocket PCs?
Jul 10th, 2007 by Tariq Bamadhaj
One of the reasons I got the Eten (Glofiish) X500 was because I loved the idea that I could make Skype calls as per normal conversations with it. Recently it seems Skype seems to have a different plan.
With the launch of Skype Mobile 2.2, users with a ARM 9 v4 Processor such as the Samsung S3C2410, SC32442 and S3C2440 would no longer be able to use the mobile version to make calls. They can still chat and keep in touch with their contacts.
Now what is Skype thinking? A lot of great devices use this chipset. Not just Eten and Glofiish but the HTC, the biggest Pocket PC maker in the world, utilizes such chips on their more popular products such as the Dopod 838Pro and Dopod D810.
So what are we to do? If you are using WM5, you can use the old version of Skype which comes pre-installed with your device. If you are using WM6, thank god for VoIP. For the rest who do not have it, you can download the last stable beta of the Skype 2.2 which still supports calls from here. I will not be responsible for any damages to your device.
Do you think Skype made a good move for not supporting such devices? Or will it lead to a lesser uptake for the program in the future?
