Recommended Software

Recently, one of the great guys at Eten Users Forum, tonychen, created what I would call a godsend software. It’s something that I’ve been looking forward to with the integration of VoIP in the WM6 ROM as well as the Skype problem.

I’ve been an avid user of VoIP and I am sure many of you who have discovered this system would agree (if not do let me know and I’ll to do a tutorial on it). When WM6 introduced VoIP integration, it was something definitely received well by me. Unfortunately, sound kept coming out of the rear (main) speakers instead of the phone speakers. Thus, a call over VoIP would mean that I either share my conversation with people around me or use a headset. Until tonychen did his magic.

With this software, all you need to do is to activate it and press the ‘Switch’ button before making any VoIP call. This would trick the phone into thinking that Skype is running and redirect sound from the rear speaker to the phone speaker. Do remember to switch back by tapping the ‘Switch’ after you finish your call, if not, sound would continue to be directed to the phone speakers and you would not hear your phone ring.

Some things to note about the software:
- You need to have Skype Receiver Switch installed. This automatically installs after a hard-reset so most people would not have to worry about this.
- It only works on Eten devices. It’s been tested to work on the Eten Glofiish X500 and M700. If you try on other models and it works, do let me know and I will update it here.
- It will not work on non-Eten (or non-Glofiish) devices.

Try out the software and tell me what you think.

Hi Tariq

Thanks for your great blog. Unfortunately, I have trouble installing the T Switch by Tonychen on my 500+. I unpack the prg on the Eten apparently it gets installed, as I can delete it from with the File Manager, however it does not show anywhere (i.e. under the phone directory nor the prg directory).

Can u help?

Regards

Bert

Hi Bert

It should show up in the Programs as a program called Switch. Did you do anything to your phone like not install Eten applications or something similar?

Yeah, it looks like you are missing the “Skype Receiver Switch”. Did you do a clean hard reset or selective install of Eten applications?

Hi Tariq,

May I know if you’re using the version of Skype that came default in ur X500 WM6 rom or u installed the “last stable beta” version 2.2? Ever since I did a clean install on my X500 weeks back, I haven’t installed skype because according to Trendsmobile, “we” should get the latest version of skype from the official skype website but there isn’t a version for us.

I wish to find out if it’s advisable to use the default skype in the wm6 or use the beta ver 2.2? Thanks!

I actually use the preinstalled version because it works great for me (I am on WM6). For those who want the last beta release of 2.2 or the preinstalled don’t work too good, it’s hosted on this blog. I did not try the last beta 2.2 though since I saw no need to upgrade. The latest version on Skype’s website do not support voice call for our devices.

Hi Marcos

You can get 2.1 from this site. Just do a search and you should find it. As for Receiver Switch, you can get it from a ROM of older devices. If you do not have one, leave your email and I will send you the file.

Adrian: I checked “Application Recovery”, the “Skype Receiver Switch” is not listed there. I went back the MobilePlanet site where I got the device [ http://www.mobileplanet.com/p.aspx?i=148877 ], it seems to me that “Skype Receiver Switch” is not a pre-loaded applicaiton for X500+.

Is there a stand alone ver of “Skype Receiver Switch” available somewhere so it can be downloaded and installed?

Thanks

Xatrixer,

the switch.cab can be found in this blog post, just above the comments :) However, I’m not exactly sure if it works for X500+ as it’s only been tested to work on X500 and M700. If it works on your X500+, pls post back so that Tariq can update the list of supported devices.

That said, I would like to add on to my prev comment above that the “skype receiver switch” can also be toggled at Start>Settings>Sounds & notifications.

Hi,

I installed the “swich”, ran it before lauching Skype 2.1 (downloaded from Etencorp.com), sound still came out from the “back” …. ! Uh … not sure what the problem was. Any advice?

Thanks.

You do not have to run the switch before running Skype. It’s a one time configuration for the Skype Receiver Switch and after that all Skype call will come out from the phone speaker. You do not even have to use the switch.cab file posted here. That is for other VoIP calls.

Just to chk, is there a copy of preloaded skype in your x500+ (meaning u can do a self-install without having to download from somewhere else)?

Which section of etencorp did u obtain the skype cos’ I’m there and can’t seem to find it. Only saw the default Eten applications.

Adrian:

Here are the URLs I followed to get the Skype 2.1

http://etencorp.com/;

then, “Support” -> User Manual & Software” -> login with registered ID and Pswd -> from the “Step2″ window, pick the model X500+ -> click on the “Software”

there are a ROM image and others “goodies” listed:

1. WWE_R01_032_0489 X500+ OS version 489 for 488 updating only OS image English(Worldwide)

2. WWE_R02_032_0543 WWE_OS OS image English(Worldwide)

3. Skype 2.1 Cab file Application Download English(Worldwide)

4. The latest version of the patch file Improved the POP3 and PIN code lost issues Patch file 1.1 English(Worldwide)

Skype was not pre-loaded on X500+. I did flushed the ROM with a newer version downloaded from above location. Then got the Skype 2.1 installed … Everything seems work fine, except certain known “issues”, such as “slow logon WiFi when device was turned on … “; remove and reseat back cover will lost all email settings; and other small annoyings”

I use SPB backup to restore email settings when needed. It suppose to fix it with the patch … but it didn’t.

Any thought?

Thanks

It was from here:

http://etencorp.com/

Support -> User Manual & Software - Login with registered ID and PW, then from Step 2 Window, pickup the model of X500+; Click on the Software: then you will see these:

1. WWE_R01_032_0489 X500+ OS version 489 for 488 updating only OS image English(Worldwide)

2. WWE_R02_032_0543 WWE_OS OS image English(Worldwide)

3. Skype 2.1 Cab file Application Download English(Worldwide)

4. The latest version of the patch file Improved the POP3 and PIN code lost issues Patch file 1.1 English(Worldwide)

There are either ZIPed or RARed (CAB) files for downloading.

I did flush the ROM with a newer version and installed Skype 2.1 obtained from above

There are still “bugs” with WiFi and “battery cover - Email settings” even after applying the patch …

Eten has very poor support and its device manual (English) has a lot of typos. I guess people who wrote it did not know how to use an English word processor.

I have two other MW6 devices made by HTC (Mogul and X7500 -ROM upgraded to WM6). Overall quality of those is much better.

there is another device branded as PHROS (if i am not mistaken) … it looks like the same as Eten x500 or x500+, and even the “internal hardware”. Not sure what hell these “little” company’s marketing tricks.

Comment by Tariq Bamadhaj

I would not recommend you to use the CAB file to fix PIN and POP3. It will disable your green LED completely and the only way to enable it back is to do a hard reset.

Yes I do agree that Eten support is embarrassing but that’s why sites like this were established to help the users out there and to come together.

The PHAROS that you hear about is the one for the US market (from what I hear). Don’t think its a marketing trick but more for localization.

Thanks X,
Now I know why I couldn’t see it in the first place - The site is “more compatible” with IE. I’ve been using FF.

I also found Skype 2.1 for my X500 but I’m not sure what’s the version installed in mine.

There are other software but i realised Eten didn’t provide detailed descriptions on what these patches are, such as GSM_Ril1212 and Skype_patch. Darn. How do I use them when I don’t even know what they do.

Regarding the PIN Patch, I’ve installed it when i did my hardreset abt a month back. It fixed the PIN issue but my wifi settings still got wiped out (not sure about POP settings because I use web-based). The patches aren’t working very well so we have to give and take some; have PIN security but no LED indicator or have LED indicator but cannot PIN lock the PPC :)

Thanks, guys.

I did a hard reset after reading your posts in order to bring back the “blinking green”. Unfortunately, my SIM card is from a foreign carrier so there is no service available - no green at all. I can care less about it as of now.

After hard reset, I brought back the data and apps I installed before via SPB backup (restore). Again, I lost my email accounts’ settings. Another annoying thing is that the stupid device will not allow you to use the previous name of the email account. The previous name is “Yahoo”, now I have to make it “My Yahoo”. What is going to be next if the back cover is opened … named the account as “my my Yahoo Yahoo - 0000001″ ???

Is there any “God_Given_Patch” that can fix Eten’s F**** - S*** problem once for ALL?

Thanks.

X

Hi X,

I know it’s painful having to hard reset and restore a PPC but instead of restoring your apps and data, how abt doing a clean reinstallation of the apps? I somehow have a feeling that the restoration part by SPB Backup (esp on your SMS MMS, if any, your emails and registry tweaks) isn’t really doing a good job.

For your existing data that can be backed up manually (notes, excel and stuffs), transfer them to your storage card or desktop computer. As for emails, you may want to ‘forward’ them another account so that you can retrieve them back into the ppc later.

To be honest, I have never used any backup software ever since (in the earlier days while I was on O2 mini) Sprite Backup could not do a proper job of backing up my SMS and caused alot of hiccups after I restored it. Now I reinstall my apps manually. Although I will lose some data which cannot be backed up, at least I know the PPC will be in a really “clean state”.

Hi Adrian:

The backup was created on Sept 16 after I flushed ROM with clean installed apps. The only data I had is my contacts and email settings … nothing else.

I like the SPB backup alot. I do backup quite often, especially in such situation as after installing “trial” program, or before hard reset.

I have had so many CE and PPC devices. Eten’s “bugs” are the biggest. here is a list of my pocket device in hands:

HP 4700 (2003SE)
HP 6945 (WM5)
HTC X7500 (WM6)
HTC PPC 6800 (Sprint Mogul)
ETEN X500+

X500+ has a good form factor and nice vga screen which is a good reason for me to get it. But it has more “troubles” than any other device I have owned so far.

Hi X,
it’s really unfortunate that there’s isn’t a PPC that’s 100% trouble-free :D but then at the end of the day, we do learn something from these troubleshooting.

Just today itself, I’ve had 2 auto soft-resets on my X500. I really don’t know why and I suspect I’ve also lost some incoming SMS (SMS came in but phone hung. When I switch on, the PPC will boot up and the SMS will no longer be there).

Back to your skype issue, perhaps switching for skype works only on the X500 and M700.

Comment by xatrixer

Adrian: Yeah, you’re right. Every PPC device has its shortcomings. Some are inherited from Bill Gates; some are “re-created” by hardware manufactures. Indeed, learning something new in trouble shooting everyday is kind of fun, but certain un-solvable, “low-IQ” issues like ETEN’s, are the reflection of the stupidity of manufacturer. Simply put — ETEN could not write a straightforward and workable code to fix the issues, such as “Back Cover and Email Settings”.

As to the Skype- speaker thing, you maybe right about it. That is probably the reason that ETEN did not put Skype 2.1 and “switch” on the device.

Anyway … thanks for all your help and see you around.

X

It should be installed in your device if I am not wrong because it is part of the Eten Rom. If you are comfortable with a hard reset, I would advice you to do one and see if the software gets installed.

Otherwise, you can always check your Programs > Phone folder to see if it is installed there. Or check Settings > System > Remove Programs and see if you can see an entry for that switch. If you do, then the file has already been installed.

Do update us when you get your device. Users are claiming that they are not able to use Skype coming out of earphone speaker but I suppose that is because the proper software are not in there. Do download and install Skype 2.1 and the Skype Receiver Switch before trying it out and let me know if you have any success with the setup. If you need any help, do leave a comment.

There is a more recent article on getting Skype to work the way it should. I would recommend you look at that and give the Skype Receiver Switch a try. The X800 does not have the same software as well, but after installing it, it works, so I presume it would work for the X500+ as well. I would also advice you do a backup before proceeding and good luck with your trials :D

It isn’t in:
