ROM Upgrade 1-2-3
Aug 24th, 2007 by Tariq Bamadhaj
With the weekend coming, this would be the perfect time to do a ROM upgrade. No busy work schedules to make you feel like you need to rush through the process and mess it up unintentionally. But before you do a ROM upgrade, here’s 3 things you need to do to ensure a smooth process.
Note: I will leave out the basic steps such as downloading the ROM and ensuring that you have sufficient power in your device before you begin.
1. Backup Your Text Messages
If you’re like me and have some text messages that you want to keep , now would be the best time to back them up. I personally use Jeyo Mobile Companion 1.1 for this process but you can use any other software. The reason you want to do this is because your text messages are not saved on your SIM card or computer and a hard reset would wipe out all those memories.
2. Check the forums or this blog for any potential problems
Granted all ROM upgrades should go smoothly but sometimes, the unexpected happens. Rather than not expecting it, spend a couple of minutes to see what are the problems people are facing with this new ROM including any potential hiccups that might occur during the upgrade process. This will save you a lot of time (and hairs) should you do encounter any problems.
3. Take out your SIM and Memory Card before you begin
This is to prevent your phone from getting a clean install after the upgrade. The reason you want to remove the SIM card is to prevent calls and text messages (or even emails if you have push option) from coming in when you are setting up your phone as this *may* cause problems during the initial setup. Same thing goes for memory cards as you never know if previous files might automatically start up during the initial setting up phase. Feel free to put them back in after your device has completed the upgrade.
Many of you may be asking if using Sprite Backup , would it be advisable to use their device upgrade option? Personally I do not do so because you never know if the code from a previous ROM may corrupt the current installation. While it is troublesome to install all your software from scratch, that is the method I would advice to ensure that your device runs as smoothly as possible.
What steps do you undertake for ROM upgrades?
