Find out what Windows Mobile Developers are thinking

Just before I went on my recent trip to Thailand, my Eten Glofiish X500 decided to go loco and crash on me. Thankfully I had Spb Backup which allowed me to do a full restoration to the night before (I backup daily) and thus my trip went ahead as planned. However, wouldn’t it be great if we could enter the Safe Mode like we do on our Windows desktop? Users of Spb Pocket Plus already have this function and I am curious as to why no other developers have come up with a standalone product. Well curious no more am I because Airscanner , the makers of mobile security softwares such as Airscanner Antivirus for PPC and Airscanner Encrypter have now come up with an alpha version of the Airscanner Mobile SafeMode.

At v0.1a, there is no webpage for this program as yet and they are only recommending experienced users to give this a go. You can get a copy of the manual here and if you want to download it, they have a desktop installer version as well as a CAB file version.

What this software does is basically to put your device into Safe Mode if you do a soft-reset within a stipulated time (120 seconds is the default). In same mode, all programs, services and plugins are deactivated by default, save for the ones you choose to activate, and this allows you to fix any problems that could have caused the crash. Problems such as changing your registry key wrongly or installing a software that was not compatible with your product.

This looks like a pretty nifty software that I think should come pre-installed with all Windows Mobile devices as it allows us to fix our own problems before calling in that backup program. However, like all new software that could potentially mess with your device, I would not recommend using it until it has been tested extensively but if you, like me, are itching to give it a go, make sure you backup your device first.

I use a little freeware prog: “safemode” which does the same. Look at http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/safemodeforpocketpc.shtml for download.
