If you are using Windows Mobile 5 or 6, the SoftKeys on your Today screen are definitely a welcome feature as they allow you to access commonly used programs with just one tap. This feature was actually on Windows Mobile for Smartphones but has finally been ported over to the touchscreen platform.

However, what if the settings provided are not what you want? Contacts and Calendar shortcuts are great but wouldn’t it be better if you could change it to say Tasks and New SMS, features which you use more often? Well now you can and you do not need any expensive software to do it. Just a Registry Editor.

To Change The Left SoftKey

  • Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\112
  • Default refers to the name of softkey so you can change it to anything that you want (Tasks for example).
  • Open refers to the location of the program installed.

To Change The Right SoftKey

  • Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\113
  • Default refers to the name of softkey so you can change it to anything that you want (Notes for example).
  • Open refers to the location of the program installed.

Some Tips

  • Always backup your registry before doing any registry changes.
  • It would also be great if you can do a full system backup before proceeding.
  • To find the location of the program installed, you can use a File Explorer and go to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs and look at the Properties of the program. The link (which ends in a .lnk) should be there. Copy everything that you see.
  • If you do not see the changes you made reflected immediately, do a soft reset and you should now see it.

There are other ways of changing the SoftKeys but this is the most basic way way. What are some of the other ways you do to change your SoftKey?

This is a very interesting site and i love it.
I am not so good with softwares and technology and those stuff but just like u, I used O2 xda first and don’t want to use a standard mobile phone again.

I had always wanted to change the softkey shortcut of my x500 but didn’t know how. Well, now I do.

Thanks a lot and keep up the good work

And by the way, I also wonder if I can use my x500 to connect my desktop to the internet? I don’t have a landline and I use a Nokia just to connect my desktop to the internet since I can’t find that option in the ActiveSync. So I use 2 mobile and 2 sim cards. It would be nice if I could get rid of the other and just use my X500.

Hi nam11

It is possible but just to check with you, currently you are using your Nokia to connect to GPRS or 3G and then getting your desktop to connect to the Nokia and using that mobile connection?

I really must apologize but I don’t really understand the go-arounds of mobile connection. But I both have 3G and GPRS.

My connection settings were sent to me by my network and these connections are: internet, wap, (mms), and streaming settings. I connect to my desktop using the USB cable, then I just click the ‘connect to internet’ option in the Nokia PC Suite and there it goes–I’m connected. Once I’m connected, I see the 3G symbol below my signal icon on my Nokia.

So…that’s how it goes..

How can I use my Eten though?

And by the way, thank really for this site..

Cause I really learned a lot.. It’s educational, Eten-speaking.

I used to worry about my very small storage memory, 3.8 MB, And some of my fave apps can’t be installed. Now, I have around 70 applications (GPS, games, SMS apps, themes, Today plug-ins, etc. etc..) and I still have 30.81 MB of storage space and 28.68 MB of program’s. I have this site to thank for.
