Recommended Software

It’s Friday once again. And on Fridays, we do a Free Software of the week that we hope would make your mobile experience even better. There are a lot of great software out there in the Windows Mobile world with more being added to the list every day. Alot of these software are actually free ones but they do not get the recognition they deserve because of the price tag attached to them. However, that is not usually the case. This week we show you why with our chosen software: XnView v1.40 for Windows PocketPC.

Intro

XnView Pocket - Main screen

This software allows you to view and manage your photos on your Pocket PC with ease. It’s free, which is always a good thing, but it’s not like many free software out there that’s bare or buggy. Sure the generic Pictures and Videos that comes with Windows Mobile 6 does great as a photo AND video viewer and it even allows you to do some minor edits on the go, so why would you need this software?

.EXE Slideshows

XnView Pocket - Setting up the slideshow

This has got to be my favorite feature of the program. I love viewing photos on my Pocket PC, be it when I am meeting up with friends and want to show them my latest vacation photos or just waiting for the bus and thinking back about the good old times. Usually, I would have to open Pictures and Videos, select the photos I want to view, and then play it in a slideshow. However, with this software, you can make an .exe slideshow easily. Just select the photos, set some options such as how long to show each photo and if you want to add in transition effects, throw in an audio file if you want and name the slideshow. That’s it. All done and good to go. Next time your friends want to see how that Greece trip turned out, just tap on that .exe slideshow and let it do its magic. If they are mesmerized, you can always send them the file; it plays even without the program.

Organize Files

XnView Pocket - Organize your photos

Took a photo in one format but want to convert it to another (because you want to email it out)? XnView allows you to do it on the fly. It also supports editing of the of the IPTC so you can make it more meaningful for yourself. And if you want to rename the files to something memorable, it does just that as well. And when viewing these photos later on, there are a host of options that you can use such as viewing according to filenames, or size, or resolution or even date. And if you need to select more than 1 photo (for delete or moving), XnView provides you with that option.

Adjust Photos

XnView Pocket - Cropping a photo

There’s also the usual options of zoom and cropping for those interested in these. But it takes it a step further and allows you to tweak the brightness, contrast, gamma and RGB. Rotation and sharpness adjustments are also 2 other features it boast that I found useful for those sub-par taken shots. I am no photo expert, but it sure looks like you can get a lot of photo work done during those times when you are away from the computer.

Conclusion

XnView Pocket will not make you a better photographer and will not replace the sub-standard camera of the X500 but it might help make those photos better. And if you are a semi-professional photographer, you could pop in your card to your PDA to see if you need to re-shoot those photos. And don’t forget to rename them while you are on your way home.
