Removing Live Contacts
Nov 1st, 2007 by Tariq Bamadhaj
If you have been using Windows Live in WM6, then chances are, your address book is messed up because all your messenger contacts and phone contacts are lumped together. Don’t try deleting your messenger contacts from contact list because this will also delete those contacts from your messenger list. So if you were to delete all your messenger contacts, the next time you sign into your Windows Messenger, there will be none for you to talk to.
Solution
The solution to this is actually very straightforward. You do not have to delete the contacts one by one. All you have to do is to go Windows Live (not Windows Live Messenger) on your PDA and enter Menu > Account options > Switch Account. This will remove all data related to your Live account on your PPC only such as your emails and your messenger contacts. So go ahead and switch the account. You can always set it up again later to get back your email.

The Drawback
At this time, after doing the switch account, your contact list should no longer have your messenger contacts in there. While you can still use Windows Live to access your Hotmail account, I would advice you against using Windows Live Messenger which would cause your list to be messed up again. Try other alternatives for IM if you really must use Messenger on the go. On a side note, even after doing the switch account, some contacts might still linger in your address book so I would suggest you clean them up manually. Just go through them one by one and delete those that are not suppose to be there.

If you must use Windows Live, go ahead and do so. But make sure your settings in Menu > Options > Sync Options has no tick for the box corresponding to Contacts and Messenger.
What has your experience with Windows Live been?

I love Windows Messenger, but perhaps I might use another program
I love how my cell phone vibrates with the alerts I receive from messenger, however I dislike all the contacts (which I can’t call from USA) to be in my Outlook contacts, why is that obligated?
What is the best Messenger substitute?
Hi Xavier
At the moment, I would say that Window Live Messenger is the best option available. I am trying out several IMs in the market including Mundu IM which I have a review coming up sometime this month. There are other free alternatives that you might want to check out as well.
