Running Skype On Your X800
Nov 1st, 2007 by Tariq Bamadhaj
Well it seems that many users are saying that the X800 does not come with Skype and are wondering if they can still use the program and make audio come out of the earpiece instead of through the loudspeaker. This is one of the advantages that Eten devices have over other manufacturers at this time and to have that removed can be a big drawback to some users. Since I got many requests for the files to run Skype on the X800, I’ve decided to upload it here to make things easier.
The Files
Explanation
You will need to download the EITHER Skype 2.1 OR Skype 2.2 beta. They both allow you to make voice calls and there are very few changes between the 2. I would recommend Skype 2.2 beta since that is the most recent version but if that is giving you problems, v2.1 should solve that. DO NOT DOWNLOAD SKYPE 2.2 FROM SKYPE’S WEBSITE. The reason is because the latest version does not support voice calls for Samsung-based processors so you are better off using either version listed above.
No matter which version of Skype you download, you will also need to download Skype Settings which allows you to choose if you want to re-direct Skype calls from the loudspeaker to the earpiece. You will get a set of options in Settings which you can make the tweak.
Steps
1. Install Skype first. Then do a soft-reset.
2. Install Skype Settings. Then do another soft-reset.
3. Tweak the Skype Receiver Switch if you want to. Otherwise, you are good to go.
Does this work for you?

Cool. I’m hoping fellow Eten users (such as those on the newer models) can enjoy skype like a normal phone on their Etens!
I am currently doing a SPB Benchmark
I will install Skype later, and try to see the quality of a phone call
Hi Xavier
I am a Skype user as well. Maybe you could email me your Skype ID and we could chat there instead?
maricornejo82
that is my skypeid
I AM 100% SURE SKYPE TO SKYPE CALLS ARE IMPRESSIVE
HOWEVER SKYPE OUT IS REALLY NOT VERY GOOD, since the receiver doesn’t hears you very well
Instead of SKype Out, I HIGHLY recommend VoIP Stung
Hi Xavier
Thanks for the heads up on this. I wonder why VoipStunt works better than Skype since they are both using the same receivers. I guess it could be the codecs?
Hi Xavier
Thanks for the post above, but I’ve just downloaded the cabs and followed your instructions to no avail - sound still comes out of the rear speaker.
I think this is because the Skype Receiver Switch does nothing. When I click on it, I get taken to the Sounds & Notifications menu, but there aren’t any buttons or options that have anything to do with Skype. Everything’s the same as it was before installing the switch. It’s supposed to give me a control to redirect the sound between speakers, right?
Any ideas how to sort this out?
Thanks a lot
Arlyn
Ah, don’t worry about that post… I realised that it works if you install it in the device’s main memory instead of the SC Card.
Cool.
Arlyn
hmm, no idea but anything that I hear has good quality, but when they hear me, VoipStunt beat Skype maybe 4-1
Hi Tariq,
How do I install a program on my X800 in general? Once I know that your instructions are clear enough to do the job.
I apologize for my ignorance.
Hi Ronald
No worries Ronald. We all started from the basics.
Installing software to your X800 is done via cab files. These are the equivalent of exe files that you use on Windows based desktop. Copy these cab files to your memory card using a card reader or you can do it through ActiveSync. Once copied, open File Explorer on your device and search for the file in your storage card. Tap on in and the launcher will install. Sometimes it says that the file is not from a trusted source and if you would like to proceed. Most of the time you can tap OK or YES if the file has been tested by others before. Select your destination memory (either Main Memory or Storage Card) and the file will be installed there. If everything goes smoothly, then it will let you know that the file has been installed successfully.
Once you have completed installation. Turn off your device, wait for about 20 seconds and then do a soft-reset before using the software. While this is not mandatory, it is more of a precautionary step to prevent any problem. If you are installing more than 1 software, you should do the soft reset before installing the next program.
Hi Tariq,
Thank you for your fast reaction and your very helpfull explanation about installing programs.
Everything works perfect as I expected it would. Wonderfull!
I have one last question about this isue.
What do you mean with;
“Tweak the Skype Receiver Switch if you want to”?
Hi Ronald
No worries there. You caught me at the right time.
What I mean is if you want Skype calls to be automatically redirected to the ear piece, then you would need to access the software and make that selection. Otherwise, Skype calls will come out of loudspeakers, which is typical with other PDAs.
Thanks Tariq. I’m very happy as it is now. No tweaking for me!
Any plans to work on the new skype version(2.2.0.37) that was released this week?
Hi Josh
Will be testing it and letting you know soon.
Are you only testing the X800 or any other Eten models. The reason why I am asking is because I have an m600. I tried the steps above and no so luck for getting the sound to come out of the ear piece. So i went back to skype version 2.0.0.51.
Hi Josh
Thanks for the update. I will be testing on the X500 and Xavier will be testing it on the X800. Since you have tested on the M600, I will be able to use that result as well.
I was able to get 2.2 beta from this page to work on my m600 with the earpiece, but only with the switch.cab. I tried it with skype 2.2.0.37, and I was unable to get skype to even load.
