Video Speed And Memory Myths

You’ve heard the speed is slow, of course it’s slow, thanks to Eten, since it has only 8MB of Font Cache! Fixing this takes aproximately 5 minutes.

Step One

Before changing the font system cache value, install a program that allows X button to really close applications. I recommend Magic Button (freeware). Install Magic Button, after the installation, keep the new X button pressed. You will see a house icon in your toolbar, click on it and keep it pressed, go to Settings, check on AutoStart

Step Two

1) First Option - SK Tools

Once you open the program, go to Tune Up! (third option), then scroll down to Font Cache size
you can try playing with these values:
16384, 24576, 32768

2) Second Option - Pocket Tool Man (freeware)

If you don’t want to use SKTools, feel free to install Pocket Tool Man. I prefer SK Tools because it also has a “Free Memory” Program that usually cleans around 1-3 MB of memory, so I don’t have to reset my Glofiish X800 if I want more memory.

Install Pocket Tool Man, then go to Programs > Pocket Toolman. Now return to the today screen, you’ll see an icon in the lower-right part of your Today screen. Click on it, go to Tools > OS Tweaks. Now go to System Font Cache, and select 32768. Click on Ok, program will prompt you to reboot the device. This is the easiest method to increase the font system cache.

32MB of font system cache is excellent, but I recommend you to select that if you have at least 20-23 MB of free memory when you start your device.

3) Third Option - Tweaks2K2.net for Pocket PC, MemMaid or Editing the registry

I believe there are at least 5 more programs that allow you to do this. Just google for “Font System Cache Pocket PC hack” and you’ll see a bunch of programs

Optional steps for freeing more memory

1) Disable input methods you don’t use

You could also disable keyboards that you don’t use frequently in order to gain even more memory.

In SK Tools, go to View (lower-left part of the screen), then click on Maintenance, scroll down and select Input Methods
Then, on Block Recognizer, keep the stylus pressed, wait for the menu to appear, and click on Disable
I only use Keyboard and Easy Keyboard, the other input methods are disabled.

2) Removing programs that automatically start with Windows

Remove the .lnk files in this folder (you can use Resco Explorer for this):

/Windows/StartUp

Make sure to move this file to a backup folder in your storage card, the only .lnk files that I have in my folder so far are these:

  • CustomInit.lnk
  • Magic Button.lnk
  • poutlook.lnk
  • services.lnk

Personal Recommendation
I recommend you to uninstall any programs that start up automatically, only load those programs needed (my today screen is NOT fancy or cool, but my device is REALLY fast), and select 32MB of memory for font cache. I uninstalled SPB Mobile Shell and deleted almost all the links in Windows/Startup

Test, Test And More Tests

  • SDHC compatibility - 4GB microSD tested!
  • T-Mobile compatibility - EDGE speed
  • Lots of storage memory
  • SPB Shell preinstalled!
  • Fast performance (after increasing font system cache to 24MB or 32MB)
  • Skype and VoIP work excellent

Memory (RAM) info

  • free RAM with the Camera trick - 24.23MB
  • free RAM without the Camera trick - 23 MB (not a lot of memory gained even without any program installed)

Compatible programs so far

  • Skype (limited to version 2.2 Beta and 2.1.065)
  • VoIP Stunt (works excellent!)
  • Magic Button
  • Spb Shell
  • Google Maps
  • Windows Live Search
  • Spb Finance
  • TomTom6 Navigator
  • Pocket Toolman
  • SK Tools
  • Pocket e-Sword (the Bible in your Glofiish X800, how cool is that!)
  • Netfront 3.4
  • Resco Explorer
  • Resco Registry

Spb Benchmark results
I did these results after installing all of the Eten applications, so the results should be a little bit slower than the actual device after a hard reset. The Spb Benchmark results have little relation to do with the device speed. If you want your Eten to be fast, basically you need:

  1. A good task manager with a X button that really closes the programs and allows you to switch between programs fast.
  2. A registry hack utility that allows you to increase your font system cache.
  3. Keep your memory high (when the device boots, it should be around 20MB-24MB).

In order to keep your memory high, you should avoid installing too many today plugins, removing keyboards you don’t use frequently, removing .lnk files from the /Windows/Startup folder, or programs that always run on your device, like SPB programs.

Don’t be discouraged! I have more than 20 programs installed in my device and I have more than 20 MB as soon as my device boots.

VoIp (Internet Calling and Skype) Results

Skype 2.2 Beta + switch + Skype Switch + SKYPE_Setting work great.

First you have to install the following files:

Go to Programs > Phone, and then on Skype Receiver Switch. Check the mark that says “Once Skype is being activated, the voice will come out from the receiver on the front of the device“. Go to Programs and click on Switch. Once in the Program, click on the Switch button, you should see a green icon on your top bar. Now, go to Skype, and enjoy!

NOTE: You could also use Skype while having 3G connectivity. I still need to make a Skype Out call, the Echo Testing service works excellent!

VoIP working great. Internet Calling directly from your phone.

Basically the quality of VoIP is the same as the quality from Skype. However I think the sound in Skype was a little bit louder, but in both cases it’s an incredible quality. When you speak however, you must speak slowly (both in an Internet Call or during a Skype Call)

I think calling from a WiFi enabled HotSpot would be the easier way to call since you’ll use the same phone application as the one you normally use to make phone calls, which is awesome. I tested a Skype Out call and an Internet Call to the same phone and both ends of the conversation have the same quality.

However, when you speak in your Glofiish X800, the other end will understand you better if you speak directly into the microphone, with a distance of 3 CM.

Verdict of Internet Calling

If you thought Skype was going to save you money and allow you to call the entire USA for free, think again. Even though it’s the first phone able to do that (thanks to the switch program), the quality for the peron that you call is not the same as the quality of a normal phone call.

If you compare a phone call from a desktop computer, using Skype or VoIP, the quality seems to be much better for the receiver.

This will be a great phone for calling the other side of the world, or your relative, but it will not be a phone that replaces business calls (for that you’ll have to use either Skype or VoIP on your Windows PC and hi speed internet connection)

GPS Programs

TomTom Navigator 6 working great
TomTom v6 Logo

Tomorrow I will do the actual test with traffic and everything (expect lots of pictures), however TomTom6 loaded just fine on my Glofiish X800. With 23 MB of free RAM (same as X500+), the program should work excactly the same (even better since it has a better processor). I am trying to make TomTom launch from the Storage Memory, since that should be much faster than launching from the SDMMC card. Tomorrow I will give a detailed review of this.

By this point of the review, I don’t understand why people complain about this device. Sure an Nvidia would be cool, 128 of MB would be very nice (actually I think that’s the one thing I would improve in this phone), but right now it’s the only QuadBand (GPS and UMTS) phone with a descent VGA screen (plus the GPS is always a nice thing to carry).

Review Of The Camera Features

The camera is a very nice add-on, however the quality of the camera is not the best I’ve seen. Sure if you want a picture and forgot your camera, take it, however, like the Glofiish X500, the camera is easy to use, the built in flash and autofocus is impressive, however the result of the photo is not.

However the camera on front of the device is impressive, that will allow video calls using 3G technology, I hope some day soon I’ll be able to test that, I don’t know anybody that has 3G and video calling enabled, if you want to give me a video call to test how cool is too see the other person using your 3G camera enabled phone, please contact me.

Status Of The Review

This review is far from over! I still need to upload photos, videos, test TomTom6 in a freeway with traffic info and everything, test some video clips. However I believe the most important part of the review has been writen. I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH THIS DEVICE although 128 MB of Memory would have been a nice thing, however it’s a fast, fun, and impressive device. Keep reading to see what’s coming next!

Testing now

  • TCPMP - The Core Pocket Multimedia Player

To-do list

  • Test 3G with AT&T
  • Test software:
    • Netfront (supports Ajax)
    • CorePlayer
    • Headphone Jack settings
    • XCPU Scalar
    • Pocket Music Bundle
    • Spb Finance

To be done later

  • TomTom6 Navigator with traffic in Los Angeles and extra voices
  • Test Google Maps with traffic
  • Test Windows Live with traffic and GPS gasoline prices
  • Test to see if this device can transmit traffic via BlueTooth to TomTom Go 920 and TomTom Go 720

The SkypePhone certainly takes the configuration time out of current smartphone with VoIP set-up and takes advantage of 3 networks cheaper calling plans but it does not have the same appeal or hype surrounding the iPhone.

I don’t have the X800…but your suggestion with the font cache worked so well on my Toshiba pocketpc (which is also VGA) that I just wanted to thank you.
It really speeds up the device.

Great review of X800, I just got mine on Tuesday, and have had to reset it once so far because I can’t for the life of me figure out how to connect to T-Mobile’s Tzone (WAP). I subscribe to this service on my T-Mobile account, but the directions provided on their site did not help. If you can help me with this configuration, I’d be so grateful.
I’ve installed Skype from link provided in this forum and it works like a charm when I connect using WiFi at home. However, I’d like to be able to check my web emails when I’m out and about, without having to shell another $30 per month for T-Mobile’s Internet service. Please, please help me.

Thanks.

Really helpful review. The files you list to make Skype work all have links to the download area except Skype Switch.cab. Where do I get that file. Also Skype 2.2.0.36 (non-beta) is now available. Have you tried that? Thanks.

Hi Michael

Yes Skype is now at v2.2.0.36 but that version does not support calls for Samsung-based processors so I would not advice using it. Let me check Skype Switch and let you know.

Great stuff, the X800 seems near perfect for my purposes. One thing though; can it accept incoming calls while being hooked up to the computer as a mass storage device?

Hi Paul

I am not sure about being able to accept calls when running as a mass storage but my experience with the X500 is that it is able to.

Hi, I thinking about to get one (X800). I really intrested about the GPS test results. When we can expect it?
I also downloaded your VOIP test result mp3 , but could not say the quality is “excellent” I rather say it is wrong.
I read in an other review when you get an incoming call (GSM) the first 2-3″ is muted so the other person cannot hear anything, did you experinced that?

Hi Arpad

I am not sure when but I will check with Xavier on that. He damaged his device and is in the process of getting it fixed the last time I heard.
