Find out how the Glofiish M800 by Eten fares
Powered by MaxBlogPress

Recommended Software

If you have recently purchased an Eten Glofiish X800, then this ROM update is for you. It was recently released and brings some needed changes to the device. However, this ROM update does not seem to be complete because there are some patches that you will need to run AFTER installing the latest ROM. I have uploaded the files on this server as well as on RapidShare to make it easier for all to download the ROM. If you need the files hosted on another server, do let me know and I will add the links below.

File Information

WWE 040 381. Please use this file only if you have the WWE version. If you are using another language, then do wait until the file is made available. Alternatively, you could change the language.

ROM Download

You just need to download from 1 of the links above. Both link to the same file. You can provide suggestions as to additional servers to upload the file in the comments below.

Changelog (may be updated with feedback)

  • “Forgetful” PIN code issue resolved.
  • General performance improvements.
  • HSDPA icon enabled and connectivity improved. (After loading 381, install the Comm Patch below).
  • Button lock issue resolved.
  • RAM/ program memory management improved.

Recommended Patches

  • Comm Patch (Improves HSDPA connectivity and GSM call quality).
  • Camera Patch (Improves auto-focus ability of the camera).

Both patches are only applicable for the Glofiish X800. Copy the files to your X800 and run from device. Do not use on other devices.

Additional Tips

  • There have been some feedback with regards to running the update on a Windows Vista machine. You might face problems if your USB Sync drivers have not been updated to USB XP drivers. Once upgraded, you should not face any problems during the upgrade.

How is the new ROM?

Hi Tariq, thanks for the great post!

I have a couple of questions:
- the Comm Patch is not a cab file, but an exe file… sure it needs to be copied over to the X800?
- I currently have ROM 353… as I read that many people had issues with 363 and I did not, I did not upgrade yet (wise decision it appears now). Now I will update of course, because some key things will be solved like the memory leak. What I find strange though is that next to the ROM 383 there are already 2 patches… Is it reasonable to think that there will be soon (this month as per the beginning of the thread on eten-users) another new ROM (393?) including these patches and eventually other stuff improved? I am asking because I am not experienced at all with ROM upgrades, and for sure not the ones from ETEN…
- finally: where did you get this info from???

Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!

Hi Geronymous

Thanks for the compliments. I scour the net quite a lot as part of my research for this blog so I was surprised that this ROM was not out yet.

With regards to the Comm patch, I was told that it should be copied over to the X800 because I tried running it on my PC and it gave an error. So my guess is that it can only be run on a Pocket PC. Some users on Eten Forums have already upgraded and they have claimed limited success so I do guess that the patch will work in your X800.

Well I am not too sure when Eten will release that patch. It could be later today, or tomorrow or even the end of the week or month. If they do introduce a new ROM, these patches SHOULD (I cannot say will because I am not them) be included but it’s always a question of when that will happen. Based on history, it does not however seem like Eten would release a new ROM anytime soon as there have been cases when patches were released together with ROMs and a newer ROM did not come out until some time later.

If you ask me, I say only upgrade if it solves some problems you are facing. Otherwise, stick to what you have in place and right and wait it out. No point fixing a device not broken right?

Are the comm patch and camera patch also language specific?
(i have a Dutch x800).

Hi Paul

I am not too sure but you could try it and see. Do create a backup before you proceed for those ‘just-in-case’ moments.

FYI this ROM has leaked and is NOT officially approved by ETEN. Some items are missing like the MODEM updater and a registry fix to increase the cache of VGA display for improved speed. My tip is to wait for a week or two until its OFFICIALLY launched via E-TENS website or via their official distributor. This ROM is in BETA stage. If you want to be a beta tester, it works quite well….

Hi @rno

I am not sure where you heard this from because this ROM was passes to me by an official distributor. But thanks for the information.

i installed the comm patch to show H icon for hsdpa.
it does show H icon for hsdpa, but that is all you getting!
speed HAVE NOT been improved! even the H icon is showing, speed is SLOW like before, only getting regular UMTS speed at around 350k.
but i did notice voice call quality been improved!

Hi netboy

Thanks for the feedback. I am getting similar feedbacks from other users who have installed the ROM as well. Hopefully Eten comes up with another ROM/patch to fix the data speeds.

Does anyone know (or can confirm) that 381 fixes the voicemail notification issue?
Also can one quantify the memory/performance improvement compared to 363?

Hi obender

There have been some reports that it does not from some users. Have you tried and see if it works for you?

That’s why I asked, I mean besides VM notification and low memory/ sluggish performance at times I don’t have any other issues. I guess I’ll wait until ETEN publishes this (or newer?) ROM on their web site.

Hi obender

That seems to be a choice many people are making too. I too have found out that 381 is being fine-tuned so hopefully the newer version fixes these problems.

Hi,

Performed ROM update but even before the update was started the X800 hung. Could only be solved with taking the battery out.
Afterwards the unit was not possible to start ! When the power button is pressed only a fast blinking red led is displayed.
Probably have to send it back to Eten?

It will not start until you close the battery cover. Check the cover make sure it clicked in.
