Google Maps Mobile Goes 2.0
Google Maps just got it’s second upgrade in as many months, this time going to v2.0. Not much changes to the menu save for some shortcuts added. But the biggest addition to the application is that now you can get your location, even if your device does not have a built-in GPS chip. That’s because the software uses cell towers to triangulate your location. While not as accurate as using a dedicated GPS chip, this means you can still get a fix when you are indoors. Now if only Google would allow me to log into my Maps account from the application and get my Saved Locations. Wouldn’t that be great?
Microsoft Releases Office Mobile 6.1
It was initially launched a couple of weeks back but due to some bugs still being present, Microsoft retracted that version. Now, it’s finally out there and you can get your copy of it here. With this new version, you can now access Office 2007 versions on your Pocket PC, something you could not do with the previous version. Do remember to install it to your SD card to save space, otherwise, you’ll be out of 7MB of memory.
FCC Leaks Point To Eten Glofiish X650
Eten sure has been busy lately, and now it seems that they are devleoping a Glofiish X650. It seems to be very similar to the X600 which is a re-worked of the X500 but an additional feature in the X650 is its FM transmitter. Not sure exactly what you can do with it but there is a possibility that you could be transmitting your MP3s to the car stereo when you are on that road trip. Another first from Eten!!
Browser War Heats Up With NetFront
Very soon, we will be spoilt for choice in terms of browsers for Windows Mobile. So far Opera (be it Mini or the version for Pocket PC v8.65) is in the lead but with Mozilla (Firefox) and WebKit (Safari) coming on board really soon, I wonder who will reign supreme. Now NetFront has also chipped in and are offering their v3.4 for Technical Preview. It’s currently free to download but you will need to fill up a form. More information over here.

Hi, I installed on my X800 Google Maps some time ago already, but I cannot get “My Location” to work… it keeps saying “Your current location is temporarily unavailable” after trying to connect through 3G.
I seem to have the same problem with Navizon Lite, that I just discovered and installed today after having read your posting about it. There I get the message “No location found” after the connection through 3G is started. With GPS I do get a location though, even though I haven’t found out yet how to see my phone’s location from my computer
.
Any tips you may have regarding the setup?
Hi Geronymous
It’s great to hear from you again.
I too get the same problem with Google Maps and after some research, I found out that it’s due to the cell tower information not being updated. To solve this, you would turn off your phone function and then turn it back on. This would update your cell tower information and you should be able to get a location. If this still does not work, try tapping on My Location a few times until you get something. For me, I have stopped trying to get My Location to work as the GPS option is much better.
As for Navizon, the reason you are unable to see your phone’s location is because there is not enough data or no data with regards to cell tower and WiFi APs near the area you’re at. What you can do is to gather these data by using your GPS module and upload it to their servers. If you gather enough points, you will get a reward as mentioned in the review. I don’t think you will be able to see yourself on the map but I am not sure at the moment.
One way is to check and see if you have tracker enabled. If on the dashboard, you see Tracker: Disabled, then you need to enable it. Go to Maps, then select Menu > Buddies > Send Location. This will enable the tracker and you (and your buddies) can see each other.
Hope that helps. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
