Recommended Software

If you are a heavy user of Pocket Internet Explorer (IE), then you may notice your device slowing down after extended use of the application. This is because your ROM is now filled with cache data, cookies and history data from your recent Pocket IE usage. You could easily clean these folders up to free up the space and thus speed your device up again. But wouldn’t it be great if you could move those folders to another location and thus not have to worry about device slowdown during surfing? Now you can.

Steps

  1. Using a registry editor, go to HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Shell Folder.
  2. There you will see 3 entries, Cache, Cookies and History. Each points to a folder on your device where the respective data is kept.
  3. Change any (or all) of those entries by pointing it to another folder, including one on your storage card if you choose.
  4. Exit the editor, turn off your device and wait 15-30 seconds before doing a soft-reset.

Caution!

As always, moving a folder (or pointing it to another location in this matter) can pose some problems:

  • Because the folders are now on your storage card, you might not be able to use Pocket IE immediately after turning on your device. This is because your storage card has not been initiated yet.
  • You will now have to manually clean up these folders to remove the files. Common clean-up programs might not update their codes to search for new locations and if left unattended, your storage card will be filled with a lot of data. Do clean it up periodically to prevent such a situation.
  • Never remove your storage card when running Pocket IE. This might cause irreparable errors.

In closing, if you are not comfortable with doing this tweak on your own, it would be best to use software such as DinarSoft’s MemMaid to do the migration for you. This way, when you use the same software for clean-ups, it will know where to look for these folders and you would not have to do it manually.

Hi Tariq,
I’m sorry that I forgot to inform you about a problem with this particular tweak on the X500. Several months back, I had this tweak done on my X500. Every time my PIE loads a website, it closes almost immediately. Initially I thought my PIE was corrupted so to get over that problem, I had to soft reset before I surf so that it doesn’t close. But I felt I cannot live with that method forever. Coincidentally, another X500 user also had the same problem. We also used the same get-around method by soft-reset. Eventually we narrowed down to the possibility of tweaking the PIE cache. After I un-done the tweak, the problem was resolved. If any readers can successfully tweak without the PIE auto-closing, please share the PPC model with us. If the readers are not sure whether this tweak will work for your PPC, please try it (but please backup as a precaution) - the tweak can be reversed.

Hi Adrian

Thanks for the update. I did not have this problem but I guess it was due to my previous tweaking of the PIE cache that you mention. Hopefully there will be another solution to it.
