WM5 Storage Goes 1.8

With SD cards increasing in capacity quickly, there might soon come a time where thumbdrives become obsolete. Imagine being able to have all your important data on your Pocket PC. Wouldn’t that be great? The thing is, a lot of mobile phones nowadays come with that feature built-in: where you can use your storage card as a removable storage memory when connected to your PC. However, it seems that while Microsoft has the capabilities, it did not include this feature in Windows Mobile.
Until Igor V. Bozhko came along and created WM5 Storage. The reason its called WM5 and not WM is because it only works with version 5 of WM onwards. So even if you are using WM6 (such as I am) you can still use this great software. The software is free and currently at v1.8.
Interface
The screen is pretty straightforward when you launch. No complicated options to set or discover. For me, I just have a tick in Removable Class and I’m all good to go. If you do not want to make changes to the card, make sure to set it as Read Only. And if you are a visual kind of person, then you can also customize the LEDs to show when there is read/write activity.
For those of you who are playing around with the software, you might notice that you can choose which drive you want to want. Based on my experience with it, choosing FLASHDR will do you no good and cause your device to hang. DSK1 is the only option you want to select. I guess it’s because this device was tested on a HTC and thus FLASHDR referred to the ROM. On Eten Glofiish devices, the ROM is known as something else and as such, this command would not work.
Do note that transfer speeds are still limited by the USB1.1 connection so if you are planning to use it to transfer large files, a dedicated storage card supporting USB 2.0 is still the way to go.
