This trick that I am going to show you will change the network operator’s name. This name is seen when you are in the Phone application. It’s the name of the network that you are currently connected to. This is more of a cosmetic trick than anything else.

Steps

  1. Turn your GSM (Phone) function off.
  2. Using a registry editor, go to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/RIL/OperatorNames
  3. Create a new string value using the Mobile Network Code (MNC)/ Mobile Country Code (MCC) value of your operator name.
  4. Type the new name under value data.
  5. Turn off your device, wait for about 20 seconds and do a soft-reset.
  6. After reset, turn on your GSM (Phone) if you have not already done so and you will see the new name.

As said earlier, this will not change the network you connect to, just the name. So if you are AT&T, changing this to T-Mobile does not mean you are now connected to its network. You are still on AT&T.

Now why would you want to do this? I could think of several reasons but the first that comes to mind would be to know when you are on your home network and renaming it to Home or something similar.

Or if you want to play a prank on your friend, you could change the name for them and they would think that they are roaming  The list just goes on.

If this does not work for you, chances are, you got the wrong code

Thanks to wid4008 from PPCSG for this tip.

What do you recommend someone use this hack for?

Hi netboy

I guess you are using it with a US carrier? If this is the case, it is kinda troublesome because each carrier has so many IDs (with their mergers and all) and pinpointing which one you are connected to is pretty difficult. My only suggestion is through trial and error. Readers from other countries (such as Singapore where the number of carriers are small) have said that it works so I guess it’s just a matter of time.
