Recommended Software

If you wished to free up more RAM and in the process, get a more responsive device, then this tool is just for you. What it does is to tweak your page pool size which is indirectly related to your RAM. That means, the bigger your pool, the lesser your RAM and vice-versa. Will this slow down your device? On the contrary, no. So why not give it a try?

Before you proceed, you’ll have to do a backup because you will be flashing your device with an edited ROM. This means that if you are currently using ROM 0402 and planning to apply the tool ROM 0402, all you need to do is to backup your current configuration, flash with the newly edited ROM and then do a restoration. A software that you can use is Spb Backup.

The File

Here is the file you require. Thanks to Cyril for this great tool.

FAQs

I am sure some of you have some doubts about this software and Cyril has taken the liberty to do a short Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for you. I couldn’t describe it better myself so here’s a copy for you:

  • What is the page pool ?The page pool is a reserved area in memory for the windows mobile kernel.
A ROM in a pocket pc is mainly divided into 2 parts (some other: IPL,SPL,ExtROM but forget it) :
    - The Kernel
    - The OS files (IMGFS)ETEN’s Pocket PCs do not have NOR/NAND ROM but a DiskOnChip that works like a SD card.
The real problem is that the system can’t execute ROM files (including the kernel) directly into the DiskOnChip.
It has to copy ‘pages’ of ROM into the RAM then execute them.
In a PC world it is called ROM shadowing.

To sum it up : the page pool is a container for pages of ROM shadowed in RAM.

  • Why changing its size ? Device manufacturers tend to choose a big pool size in order to have a pocket pc that can do a wide range of tasks.
In pratice, most users do the same tasks : GPS mainly, some media, then a classical phone usage.
Most users don’t need a big pool size but a lot of RAM.
  • Why don’t ETEN do this ? In fact, they tend to choose smaller pool size than before : X500+ last ROM (544 Russian) defines it to 8MB, it was 10MB before.
  • How big will be my RAM after this patch ? You will get :
    - 32 MB available with a default WM6 install and a 4MB pool size
    - 30 MB available with a default WM6 install and a 6MB pool size
    - 28 MB available with a default WM6 install and a 8MB pool size
    - 26 MB available with a default WM6 install and a 10MB pool size
    - and so on…
  • Is my device compatible ? The ETEN firmware patcher is compatible and was tested with :
    - X800
    - X500+
    - X500
    - M700
    - G500+

I am definitely going to give this tool a try. My phone’s in need of a hard reset with all the software that I install for reviews so this tool could not have come at a better time.

Hi, my M700 really needs to be reflashed but I’m wainting for a cooked rom, maybe someone could include that hack and others so we can have a faster devices

Tariq can you make a new blog entry regarding cooked roms for eten devices ? I only know the http://eten-users.eu/index.php?showtopic=12332 but it misses this and other hacks :(

Another thing I want to ask you or anyone that can help, is there any way to enable the camera flash to be used like a flash light on my M700 ? i’m missing that feature :(

best regards

Hi PJMDS

My X500 needs to be hard-reset as well and I too am waiting for a cooked ROM. I think this tool is pretty straightforward to use. I am still in the process of learning how to cook a ROM but I will cover the topic once I create one.

I think there is a script for the flashlight but I would not recommend it. Reason being, the LED was not made for a flashlight and using it for long periods of time would cause it to become dim. This happened to a lot of HTC Universal users (I was one of them) when someone created a tool for it.
