Recommended Software

I used to have a hard time deciding which new software I wanted to try and/or buy. There were great reviews from various sites and then there were the best-selling lists that most of the software selling sites had. It was always difficult for me to balance and give points to each software and decide. Which is why I thought this list might be useful. It’s a list of the top (5 for this month) software for the month and it’s calculated unlike any other.

Unlike software selling sites that rate best sellers based on user ratings or number of licenses sold or sites that rate them based on reviews, this list consolidates all these information into a database and calculates the priority from there. So the software listed here are not just the top 5 based on number of licenses sold or because they got great reviews from other sites. They are in the list because of all those reasons and more.

And for those wondering, here are the Top 5 Software For January 2008:

Rank Software
5 Top 5 Software For January 2008 - eWallet eWallet by IliumSoft
4 Top 5 Software For January 2008 - MemMaid MemMaid by DinarSoft
3 Top 5 Software For January 2008 - Brain Evolution Brain Evolution by Spb
2 Top 5 Software For January 2008 - Mobile Shell Mobile Shell by Spb
1 Top 5 Software For January 2008 - Pocket Plus Pocket Plus by Spb

(Note: Version numbers were left out as they were not included in the calculation)

What do you think of this list? Were you surprised by the winners and ranks? Or was it something you expected?

Just to recap, algorithm that came up for this list is still being fine-tuned and I would really appreciate your comments. Let me know what you think should be ranked and what should not. Which standard (number of licenses sold, ratings, etc) should take priority over the other? Or which standards should be removed/added? I know the readers of this site are a knowledgeable and creative bunch so let your thoughts flow in the comments below.

There are more cool and usefull software, my favorites are:
NewsBreak, Opera mini and mobile, TCMP with flashvideobundle to watch youtube videos, TomTom, Resco Explorer, Resco Radio, Resco Photo Viewer Pro, Resco Audio Recorder, Pocket Rar, Google Maps, last.fm mobile, WifiFoFum2, MortPlayer, Pocket Mechanic Professional.

I also used phoneAlarm but the latest versions caused my phone not to ring when people called me, it was weird and I dont know if the problem was related to that software or not.

What about Pocket Mechanic Professional have you tried it ?
I think it’s better than MemMaid.

Hi PJMDS

Yeah I do agree that there are more cool software out there like the ones you mentioned. The problem with tracking these is that not many sites having the download numbers for them. As a result, freeware is really at a disadvantage in this area and I am not sure how to overcome it at this point.

Those commercial software that you mention are great too, just that these 5 made the cut based on number of downloads from various sites as well as reviews. I am still working on the algorithm so if you have any suggestions as to how to improve it, do share.

Yes I did try Pocket Mechanic Professional (in fact I did a review of it here). I think both software are great. They each have features that the other doesn’t. For me, Mechanic seems to take a lot longer to clean up files but they are more thorough while MemMaid does a fast job which more than meets my requirement but does not seem to go as in-depth as Mechanic.

Yep it’s really difficult to track every software available  everyday we get more options, it’s good to have lots of software options but difficult and time consuming to decide between them, have no idea how to help you improve the TOP 5, sorry

I totally forgot your pocket mechanic professional review  , will read it again and comment on it

Little off topic, I must be getting blind, cannot find where to register on this blog FORUM, can you help me ?

i got spb mobil shell and agenda fusion but find them both too cluttered with alot of stuff i dont really need. i just like a few things on my today screen. i use spb pocket plun and spb time (however i might dump it because the alarms stopped working a few days ago). im surprised to see ewallet at #1, i wouldnt think people would want all that info on a ppc if it get stolen. im sure theres ways to hack it. i really like resco radio too.

Hi brayndeded

eWallet is at number 5 and I guess the reason it’s there is because with the amount of personal information that we have to remember with us, it would be much safer to have it on a Pocket PC than pieces of paper.

My name is Xavier Baez and I disagree with Tariq.

Yes, I wrote the Glofiish X800 and seemed like a happy customer, but after spending $1400 in 2 glofiish devices, I decided it was time to switch to another brand.

A former Pocket PC user (LifeDrive which was crappy but fun, and Dell Axim X51V which was AWESOME), I really wanted VGA. I would use a QVGA phone but at 2.8 or (worst) 3.5 (like the upcoming HTC Sedna) I don’t know if I’ll lika a QVGA product.

One thing is sure, I was tired of the 64MB of RAM. Tariq is happy and I hope you guys have fun, the V900 certainly LOOKS very nice. However, as a PHONE, my Glofiish X800 was very bad, as a GPS it took ages to get the signals, and as a Pocket PC 2 of my last 2 Eten devices were damaged (one the microSD slot, and another one the bluetooth collapsed, and I had to reset the device because it sounded like a blown speaker)

I think that MemMaid is at number 2 only because you have devices with 64MB in RAM. Right now I’m using iMate Ultimate 6150 and it’s a simple device, not pretty, but very powerful, I hope it’s not an illusion.

I would also like to say that iWindowsMobile is doing a fantastic job (maybe they try to copy iPhone too much, I DON’T LIKE GoodWin to block my device each and every time, I don’t need that!!!), so I guess that should be there instead of MemMaid because MemMaid is only good because your hardware is limited.

Nobody that has an HTC will agree with MemMaid been there in number 2

Hi Xavier

Well like I said in the post, this list was derived from an algorithm, not by emotions on a certain software because I wanted to get as big a picture as I possibly could. I tracked downloads, ratings and reviews to come up with the list. I do agree that it’s not perfect because freeware are at a disadvantage.

That being said, I don’t think you understand what MemMaid does. For one, it helps you clear your temp files which is located in the ROM. No matter how much ROM you have, it is bound to get clogged up by useful files over time and MemMaid helps you clear them in a very simple step. It also clears unwanted (dangling) notification, something that affects every user, whether they know it or not, whether they are running 64MB or 128MB of RAM. And it does a whole load of other things as well like completely removing software (unlike the Remove Program feature in some cases). So yeah I would see why MemMaid could be useful to many users.

As for your argument on 64MB RAM, well what can I say? I am pretty happy with my device. I don’t get something because it has top specs or is a best-seller. I get something because it works for me. 64MB RAM may be small but my device is functioning great. Maybe it’s because I have yet to try a 128MB RAM device from HTC but then again, with their video driver issue, why would I want to get the device now? True there are other brands out there with 128MB RAM but like I mentioned, my GPS works great (locks within 30 seconds most of the time), my device is not slow (I schedule automatic regular cleanups) so why would I spend money getting something new?

My first and only pocket pc is one Eten M700, there’s much I don’t like about it but many things can be solved, the GPS is fast and reliable with TomTom but the Wifi and other things could be better.

I do agree with you Tariq on the regular cleanups, those are essential on any windows mobile device, it’s not ETEN fault but microsoft and maybe other software programmers, maybe with other mobile OS now competing for the same market they start to improve windows mobile.

Ok I will try MemMaid

Tariq regarding the top bar on top of the page, is there any way you can make it NOT follow you when you scroll the page??That is what makes me want to close that always!

I would suggest SK Tracker and SK Tools, both work great for me.I don’t know if I need MemMaid with SK Tools, but I’ll give it a try.Yeah I somehow agree Microsoft ALWAYS needs a lot of memory

Hi Xavier

I do agree with you on Microsoft. As for the software, each has their own advantage and disadvantage such that there is a software for everyone.

As for the top bar, well that’s the way it’s been programmed, you can always close it if it is bothering you.

Personally I’d need to include Spb Diary and Phone Suite.

One of my “top” apps would be WM5torage.
