Find out what Windows Mobile Developers are thinking

There was a lot happening in the past week in the Windows Mobile world so this week’s post is going to be longer than usual. Let’s not waste time and get straight to the content:

  •  What do you do with your old Pocket PC when you get a new one? If you stay, keep it as a backup, check out this guy did with his.
  • Modacco did a podcast last week which was pretty interesting and covered topics such as HTC Class Action and Paul’s Crazy Idea. What’s the idea you ask? Well you have to check out the podcast to find out more.
  • If you like interviews, we’ve got one for you. This time it’s with Adam Taggart, Director of Marketing for Yahoo! Mobile. It’s been summarized but they do have a link to the full interview for those interested.
  • If you are using a Linux, then you might have some problems sharing the internet with your Windows Mobile 6 device connected to it. In that case, this guide might just have the solution you were looking for.
  • And I have another podcast for you here. This times, it’s from msmobiles, the folks who bring us the latest in Windows Mobile news.
  • It seems that SIPs are the rage nowadays with a new company bringing you another set of SIPs. Yes that’s right, 2 more choices. I am pretty contented with what I have right now but for those still looking for that SIP to click with, you’ll want to check this out.
  • If you are new to Skype, you’ll want to check this out. If you’re an avid user or even an ex-user, this article might be interesting as it serves to explain Skype.
  • It seems that Kaiser users are sick of HTC’s inaction over the driver issue and have taken matters into their own hands. They’ve now raised a bounty of over $5000 that will be given to anyone who can come up with a solution. Are you in?
  • Ok this next one is not exactly related to Windoes Mobile. But I thought it was interestingh on how you could make your own roll up keyboard. Check it out.
  • Ellen, from IliumSoft, who’s here for the Developer Series, has a very interesting blog entry about her predictions for the mobile software industry in 2008. Not many developers give their take on blogs so when I found it, I decided to check it out.
  • Mobile FireFox for Windows Mobile is not here yet but if you would like to follow its development and see what’s in store, this post is the one for you.
  • There was no news bigger than that of Skyfire this week and for those of you in the dark, it’s touted to be the browser that saves Windows Mobile. Pretty big words I must admit but watch this video to find out why. And here’s a post about it.
  • Do you still use IR (infra red)? I don’t and Eten thinks that its a useless feature which is why it’s been removed from the Glofiish models. But then these people come around and boost it up and you start to wonder if it will make a comeback.
  • This next article is pretty cool. It talks about wireless charging. That means you no longer have to connect your PDA or phone to the charger to charger it. Follow this link to find out how it work.
  • Have you ever wished to try a phone out before you buy it but could not because it was an online store? Well now you can. With this site, you can try the phone you want. Not as great as holding it in your hands but its a start.
  • It’s anyone’s guess as to when Windows Mobile 6.1 will be announced but many are betting it would be sometime soon. What’s your bet? However, it seems that someone has been able to get their hands on it before hand. Here’s a post on it which is in Portugese but you can easily translate it to English.
  • Another article from jkOnTheRun and this time it reminds us to always be aware of our surroundings. You never know when you will be featured in a blog post.
  • We all have our own wants in a cell phone. Well dvice, a new site that was recently set up, list their 10 features that every cell phone should have. Do they fit your bill?
  • And for those who love watching tv online, this new site that was set up is something that you want to check out. The number of channels are limited at this time, but who knows, they might just add some more in the future.
  • There’s been a lot of Eten Glofiish X800 reviews out there, including one on this site. However, this is one of the more recent ones and it shows that HSPDA speeds are possible on the US networks. Do check out the rest of the article too.
  • Again another post that is not related to Windows Mobile but worth mentioning. If you have ever considered switching from Windows to Mac (and I am not talking about the iPhone), be sure to have a read of this one.
  • And lastly, if you have ever considered developing for Windows Mobile, this short article will help you get started in the right direction.

As usual, if you have something that you want featured in this segment, feel free to let me know about it.

Hi Tariq , how do you know all those news ? do you go to every blog, forum, site everyday or do you use something to manage feeds from them ?

I use one program to manage feeds but it already has to many feeds than I can read everyday, not all my feeds are about the pocket pc world but mostly about technology.

Hi PJMDS

There are some sites that I do go to on a regular basis, some more often than not. I use a variety of methods from feeds, to newsletters to relationships to trade and so forth. It’s really hard to pinpoint on one because there are so many options.

Hi PJMDs

I sure will. I just saw solar powered device. It’s pretty cool. Maybe you could make a portable solar powered charger for our phones :D

It’s easy to charge your ppc with the sun, even if you know nothing about electricity, there’s just a problem, each panel like those I used can only provide a current of something like 200mA with the sun directly over them (no clouds), as you might know to charge properly our devices you need a good and stable source of power, for example USB can provide stable 5V with a current of 500mA, with solar panels you can’t keep stable voltage and current unless on those summer days without any clouds, even in those days you need many solar panels to get those 5V and a current of at least 500mA.

Charging my ppc with solar panels I found out that it caused problems because of the low current, the battery wouldn’t charge properly, even if the device was at 100% battery it could drop the 30% and become unstable. To overcome that
I’m currently working on a device that follows the sun and charges a 6V lead acid battery, with that device it will be easy to charge my ppc and have no battery problems.

There are commercial products to charge our devices with the sun or wind but I know that they have the same problems with low currents.

Best regards

Hi PJMDs

I am speechless man. Really.

I know there are some devices, and correct me if I am wrong, that uses a reservoir or something like that. So the solar panel would transfer charge to the reservoir and it in turn will charge a device, which could be a Pocket PC. This way the Pocket PC will be getting a constant current/charge.

Sorry I am using the wrong terms but I hope you get my idea.

Something like that, you can store energy in devices called capacitors http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor but they cannot store much energy, the high capacity ones can only provide power for a few seconds to one ppc, they are useful to help maintaining voltage constant but not to work as battery’s. That’s why I choose a lead acid battery for my solar tracker, it’s easy to charge and has very good capacity, the only disadvantages are the size and the weight.
