Sometimes, the sound files available for your choosing just doesn’t measure up. When this happens, you tend to customize or add your own but how do you do it in Windows Mobile? Well there are 2 ways to do so, depending on which format your file is in.

Method 1: MP3

If the file is in MP3, then place in it /Application Data/Sounds and that’s it. The next time you need to select a notification sound in Sounds & Notifications (or in another application for that matter), the file you’ve placed will be made available.

Thanks to KCHruby from Pocket PC Addict Forums for this tip.

Method 2: WAV

For wave files (.wav) you can place them in /Windows/ and they will be made available.

Caution

Now that you know, you might be tempted to place the latest hits in your Pocket PC. Not advisable because once the file starts, it will play till the end, even if you have canceled the notification. So unless you want Rihanna’s latest hit to keep on going in repeat every time you get a text message, I would recommend you keep the file small and the playtime short.

There might be other methods or even applications out there that you could use for this and some even allows you to place your file on the storage card to save space. If you need something more than what is offered above, be sure to look around.

What are some of your methods for importing sound in to your Pocket PC?

Ah, this is good. There is often a lot of confusion about where to save stuff. Today themes can go in the My Documents folder and the root of the Storage card, that’s what’s quite fixed in my mind. But the ringtone locations never sticked inside my mind, I hope they do now. Thanks!

For those who just want one easy way to select parts of one popular mp3 file and use them has ringtones try http://vitotechnology.com/en/products/ringtoneeditor.html , it comes with gay colors and a little weird way to use but it does the job

Personally I use Audacity on my laptop, it has way too much features for just cutting mp3’s, but it does the job!
(And I’m a feature junkie  )

Just a word of caution about putting ringtones on the SD card, it’s slower than the ppc memory, can cause the ppc to not respond fast to the buttons and if the card gets any problem you might not get notified about incoming calls, that happened to me and I don’t know if it was caused by phonealarm or other strange bug.
