Just a quick update on this Saturday. We have just gotten hold of the Eten Glofiish M800 (there is a reason I am using we in this case and it will be announced soon) and will be putting it through the paces. But while we are doing that, I would like to invite you to share with us the tests that you want carried out. What do you want to know about the Eten Glofiish M800? What kind of applications and standards should we test it against? While I can’t promise that we will be doing all the tests you suggest, we will try to do as many of it as possible.

Eten Glofiish M800

For those wondering, the review of the Eten Glofiish M800 will take quite some time as we really want to test it out fully. And to ensure that this is as complete as review gets, we will need your help. Together we can really determine if the M800 is worth the price and who this is targeted at, what you should look out for and so forth.

To leave your request for a test, just leave it in the comments section below and we will get to it. Back to what you were doing to on this great Saturday

I want some comparison pictures between the X800 and M800 as far as their camera goes. I’ve been very disappointed with the picture quality on my $700 pocket pc being blown away by my $99 T-Mobile piece of junk I use for voice. It’d be nice if they upgraded/fixed the software or something for the camera.

Also I want to know any differences between the x800 and this (Pretty sure there aren’t any, right?)

That might be a bit tough as I don’t think we have the X800 in house.

The thing is, Pocket PCs don’t have great cameras. In fact, most camera phones are not up to standard to their digital cameras. The only good pictures I have seen from camera phones came out from the Sony Ericsson ones. Even Nokia with their 5MP (on the N95) does not perform as well as the SE models.

I think the only difference is the QWERTY keyboard on the M800. Specs wise, they are the same.

First of all, thank you for the opportunity, I personally appreciate it a lot! Of course, you cannot guarantee that you will do all the user-requested tests on the M800, but even the possibility is refreshing!
I am looking forward to buying the M800, but before that I would like to know about the limits the 64M RAM may impose. The most important (for me) would be to know how the M800 works with the latest iGO navi sw. iGO is THE most popular sw in my region (eastern Europe), so this is for sure something not only I am interested in….looking forward to reading your comprehensive M800 test. I only hope it will not take more than a few weeks, tho :) Some part-reviews in 2-3 day intervals would not be bad :)

Hi Tamas

I am not sure if I can get hold of the iGo in time but I will see what I can do :D

Does the keyboard buzz when it’s lit?
Are there lines on the pictures taken by the camera?
Is the microphone volume good?
Are the yellow keys illuminated by the keyboard light?
Does suggest x words re-enable every soft reset?
Do any keyboard presses get skipped when typing a lot?

Good tests. Will be sure to keep them in mind when doing the tests.

The VGA screen is a big factor for me, however I’ve heard some negatives things in the past with x500+ due to choppiness with web browsing, and videos, etc. I’d appreciate it if you could perhaps review the screen in this aspect. I don’t want to shell out $800 and for it to annoy the heck out of me. Also a review on the limitations of the 64mb ram would also be useful. Thanks a lot.

Sure thing. Don’t expect too much though because like the X800, it should be on the laggy side due to a lack of graphics chip. But we’ll have to wait and see.

I’ve had the M800 since januari 4th and sent it back because of the paint chipping problems. Have received a new device last week and I have played with it for a while now.

I can answer some of the questions for you guys ..
* I recommend to change the pool size of the ROM to 6Mb in stead of the standard 9Mb. This way it gives me 28,3Mb free with Tomtom, iLauncher, Opera, TCPMP and 8 E-ten programs installed.
* The screen colors and resolution is fantastic!
* Video performance is okay, but you can clearly see the screen being drawn from left to right, especially when viewing high motion parts of a movie.
* For browsing the web I recommend the new Opera 9.5 beta browser, this is clearly the best and fastest browser available. Check it yourself!
* I don’t have problems hearing the keyboard while it’s lit.
* Yes, the orange symbols on the keyboard are also illuminated.
* Have had no problems with skipped keys while using the keyboard.
* Pictures on the M800 aren’t that great. Especially in low light conditions. Because of the camera button being a little bit hard to press, pictures tend to be blurred by the movement of you hand.

All in all I find it a pretty cool device. :o)

Woot! Thanks for carrying out the test. Much appreciated. I really wished that Eten had included a graphics chip to speed things up.

I’d like to know, if there is a particular test for this, what negative effects result from the M800 having only 64MB RAM on board. I’m considering purchasing either the M800 or the i-mate 9502, but the former has a faster processor and the latter has more RAM, so performance and stability are my major concerns.

1) Does it have auto-call recording? (you can use AudioNotes 2.5 to test)
2) Does it have good contacts management? eg a) save into existing contacts, b) sms contacts details to other phones, c) save contacts into sim
3) Can it send pictures direct to spaces (Microsoft blogging website) using the Pictures and Videos app?
4) Is the quick GPS app (download satellite data) useful, ie helps in fixing the satellite faster?
5) can you do battery test? I’m especially worried because of the VGA screen
6) how long does the screen take to change to landscape mode after sliding out the keyboard?
7) does the qwerty keyboard has PgUp & PgDn abilities? Useful when scrolling internet
8) U did mention that your T-Mobile doesn’t have 3G yet, but if, by chance u got to use somebody else’s AT&T line, can u test the HSDPA speed using both dslreports.com on the phone, & speedtest.net on the laptop/PC(tethered using USB or bluetooth)
9) This is very important- it having VGA screen means we can zoom out Excel files and still can read the text. However, with both WM phones I used, Excel doesn’t remember my last zoom level. So, I had to re-zoom everytime. Does it have this problem too?
10) How good is the Bluetooth setting management?
11) Is there a keyboard shortcut to go home/end of a sentence?
12) Do the contact-photos appear in incoming call, outgoing calls, dialpad last call, sms, e-mails and mms?
13) Does it have smart-dialling? iè in dialpad, u can use the keypad like T9 keypad, & it’ll search names for all combinations of the keypad numbers
14) how reliable is the internet sharing using either bluetooth or usb?
15) how good is the quality of stereo bluetooth when listening to MP3’s?
16) can you run benchmark on videos using tcpmp?
17) Is the Video camera quality ok?
18) Does the camera take pictures fast?
19) Are there LED Notifications for sms/mms received/ missed calls?
20) how good are the softkey assignments eg sms should have ‘new sms’ softkey instead of for example 4 key presses just to create new sms. Also, calendar softkey should have ‘edit’
21) Are there press+hold assignments for side buttons (the front hard buttons are touch buttons, so, can’t) to launch apps?
22) Do contacts show the contacts’ call history?
23) At what percentage does battery-low-warning appear? Too low, like 10%, can sometimes mean, before u get a chance to charge, it already runs out & phone is shutdown
24) Is there keyboard backlight setting so that there’s option to lengthen the time before it offs itself?
25) can front-facing camera be used to take pictures?
26) Is there a search function in sms, ie something which makes it easy to find text in past sms/ emails (sender/ to etc) just by typing the first few letters?
27) How good is the 3G video-calling quality?
28) Does it get warm when running too many programs?
29) Is it slow during contacts ‘matching’, ie searching for names
30) How good is the ‘Save As’ feature? some WM phones don’t separate SD card from main memory folders
32) Is it still slow to load big Word files?
33) Is there a ringtone profile, that when there is an appointment, it automaticaly sets phone to vibrate mode?
34) Can you download emails from company’s Microsoft Exchanger Server? and can you call-up company address book from within Pocket outlook using search? How reliable is the Push Mail feature?
35) Can it accept vcard (contacts details) sent from other phones?
36) Does the SIP keyboard pop-up when slide-out keyboard is in use? Would be annoying if it did

And the most important, as ja already stated, has your device the paint chipping problem (either whole device or only back cover)? Use it for three days and you know for sure ;)

Ok, having some problems with the M800. I’m sure I have a defective unit but who knows. I live in the US and currently have at&t service. Put my SIM card in, showed me on the network, (currently have the ROM dated 1/15/08) and everything seemed fine. Installed my data connection thru MEdia Net, no problems… Then I tried to use the phone… Every time I try to send a call, It will give me a series of beeps. Funny thing is, sometimes when I do this, the person I am calling will get the incoming call but when they answer, both sides just hang up. Also, when someone tries to call me, The phone will ring. Then when I try to pick up it says connected but on their end the phone is still ringing and both sides can’t hear each other. Sounds like a bad band or something. Whats even stranger is I can send text messages no problem and MMS messages with no problem as well. I love the phone but I need the main part of it… The PHONE! Also, no signs of paint chipping and I have had some serious handling with the phone in this attepmt to get it working properly. I currently don’t have 3G service in my area (only EDGE) but that should not make a difference. I have tried to switch the bands ( GSM, AUTO, etc, etc) and no luck. Also, after a soft reset, when I try to use the phone for the first time, I get a loud crackling sound that sounds like some kind of short curiting. I was able to make one or 2 calls on the move but that was it and I think that may be an issue with jumping from towers but 95% of the calls were not connecting. Anyone have any ideas??

Have you tried to remove the data connection and seeing if the problem is still there? You could also try a hard reset and see if the problem is still there. If it is, looks like you got a defective unit and you will have to send it for repair. Otherwise, looks like it’s a software corruption.

I have done the hard reset and still not working. I have also done an install with and without the ETEN software install (camera trick) I have also done a re-install of the ROM (was the same version ROM as the one that came with the phone) and still not working. Also tried it without the data and same results. I don’t think there should be an issue with not having 3G in my area no..? I love the phone as I did use it for a day with text messages, date use and MMS messaging… Nothing like VGA… The web experience is sooo great! Now that I have had a taste of VGA I don’t know if I will ever go back…

Sure looks like there is some problem with the device itself. You might have to send it for repair. I do agree that with VGA, the experience is so much better. It’s gonna be hard to be going back though.

Tariq, are you using at&t in the USA..? If so, was there any special settings that needed to be set to have the phone work with voice calls other than just putting in your at&t sim card? I also confirmed that my SIM card is 3g and I also just replaced it to rule that as being the problem. Same results.

Nope I am on T-Mobile USA so I can’t really say much. I just popped my SIM card and go.

What about your ROM date… Mine is 1/15/08. Maybe the one from 1/30/08 will fix the problem? But I can’t find it anywhere on the WEB.

With that ROM installed which is the same as mine… Under the phone settings in other, are your bands labeled UMTS, GSM and OTHER…? Or do they show the band numbers to choose..? Mine is as decribed…

Yeah mine shows UMTS, GSM and Auto. Got it mixed up with the X500.

well, I just confirmed it. the m800 does NOT work with at&t in the USA. just put in a friends t-mobile sim and all worked just fine. question now is will eten fix this and when..?

That’s rather weird. Looks like the M800 does not connect onto the GSM850 band which AT&T uses. I think Eten should be fixing this but there might be a solution in the mean time. Let me see if I can dig it up.

FYI…. paint is now chipping from back cover only. I know the Eten Webshop is sending out replacement battery covers to all which is nice. also, not sure if anyone lik threaded text messaging but the palm rip from the treo 750 works great on the m800. even the MMS works in it which is rare!

Thanks for the heads up. I assume you got your device from them? Is there any difference between the old one and the new one?

I think the biggest difference is the ROM version and the fact that so far the paint chipping is isolated to the battery cover. so far I like the device. writing from it right now. Battery life is a bit poor but I just ordered the extended battery from Clove. comes with a new battery cover, LOL. but I am alittle unsure on how to do the poolsize fix. maybe one of you guys can walk me thru it..? with all stock eten items installed, you do run out of ram fast so thats why i think its a must for the poolsize rom fix. thanks again for the support and I will keep on posting.

Comment by Tariq Bamadhaj
2008-03-02 12:42:36

I think the battery is poor because it’s not conditioned yet? Maybe after a few charging cycles, it would last longer. That proved to the be the case on my end. There is an article on the poolsize fix which is pretty easy to follow. If you have any problems there, feel free to let me know and I will guide you through it.
