Find out how the Glofiish M800 by Eten fares

Recommended Software

Doing a clean install is really great because your Pocket PC will not get loaded with all the unnecessary applications that would take up your precious main memory storage space. However, not all those applications, in this case the Eten applications, are useless. For me, I prefer having the GPS Viewer and Satellite Data Update on my device as it has proved useful. But if you have tried, you might have known that you cannot get GPS Viewer to work if you do a clean install because it is missing some files. Well, I’ll show you which files exactly so you can replace them and get it going.

Needed Files

There are 4 files needed for GPS Viewer to work which are:

  1. MFC80U.DLL
  2. msvcr80.dll
  3. pfAddin.dll
  4. PhoneSoft.dll

If these 4 files are placed in the /Windows/ folder, then GPS Viewer would work.

How Do I Get These Files?

These files are installed when you install Phone Application (PhoneService2.0). So there are 2 ways you can go about getting the needed files.

Method 0

This is the easiest method and I have to thank PJMDS for compiling the needed files into a CAB which means all you need to do is download it and install it just as you would with any other CAB file. And you can also just as easily uninstall it if you want to.

There are 2 versions, the first contains just the necessary files listed above. The second (aptly called extra) contains all those files as well as the GPS Viewer, SMS Location and Satellite Data Update CAB files as well. Which means you only need to install one CAB file to get all 3 functions.

Method 1

I have copied the files from my Eten Glofiish X500 and put them in a zip folder for your convenience. Just download, unzip and copy them to your device, turn it off, wait for 30 seconds and do a soft reset.

Method 2

If the files above do not work for you (I am not sure if they will work on other devices because I do not have the capacity to test) or you are not willing to try those files, then what you can do is to install the Phone Application CAB from your device. You should be able to find something called Phone Application in your Application Recovery.

Once installed, search your /Windows/ folder for those files and copy them to your storage card. Then remove Phone Application and copy these files back to /Windows/ and everything should work as before.

Space Saved

These files are not small, totaling just over 1MB. However the space taken is relatively smaller (more than half) compared if you were to install Phone Application. So in the end, you would still save a significant amount of space. On a 128MB ROM, it would be significant anyway.

Update on Feb 20th: Added new cab files under Method 0. Thanks to PJMDS.

Does this method work for you?

That would be awesome. I do not know how to create CAB files so if you could do it and email it to me, I will post it up here as Method 3 :D
